When we lived in Anchorage, Alaska, we would watch the termination dust march down the slopes of the Chugach Mountains to the east as the freeze level descended.  They called the first dusting of snow "termination dust" because it signalled the end of the summer.

Interesting, we have here no special name. I expect that it's because we have seldom in the last decades real winter. So it's more a whiff of winter :-)

I'm from the northeast and we have a bit same forest in the Vosges or Alsace.

It's similar to the hils here - it's the so called Odenwald. Not that high and not that much coniferous forest like the Vosges but at the other side of the Rhine and Palatinate Forest. :-)
